PROJECT

Using Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) technology to discover and map rock shelters within Isla Gorge, part of Wulli Wulli Country.

ISSUE

Rockshelters contain some of the Wulli Wulli Peoples most significant heritage, including rockart, burials and occupation deposits more than 20,000 years old. However, the rugged, inaccessible terrain of Isla Gorge has prevented the recording and active management of these significant features. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) hope to undertake backburning programs within the Gorge, but the Wulli Wulli People are concerned that this will lead to damage to their significant heritage. They are also concerned about the unknown damage being done to these features from introduced flora and fauna, as well as substantial changes in burning practices.

SOLUTION

By taking advantage of the expertise provided by QUT in RPA remote sensing technology including multi-spectral imagery, RGB filtering, LiDAR, it is possible to survey and map large scale gorge systems that are inaccessible by foot.

OUTCOME

A detailed mapping database of the cultural heritage values of the Isla Gorge, including rock shelter locations. Detailed mapping will ensure that sites can be adequately protected and preserved for future generations. It will also provide critical data for future archaeological excavations.
